Girl, 8, Designs Artwork For Doughnut Boxes

Seacoast Girl Battles Cancer With Help From Jimmy Fund

POSTED: 5:25 pm EDT July 26, 2005

Anyone picking up a morning cup of coffee at Dunkin' Donuts may notice specially decorated doughnut boxes featuring art from a Seacoast girl.

Lilly Brown, 8, is one of dozens of young cancer patients who entered a doughnut box design contest put on by Dunkin' Donuts and the cancer fighting Jimmy Fund. Lilly has been battling cancer for the last year and drew the winning picture while undergoing chemotherapy at the Jimmy Fund Clinic in Boston.

She calls her work of art "Sunset on the Summer Sea."

"Well, I was thinking, when I look out my window ... I look out and I see all these different colors in the sky when it's sunset," Lilly said. "It's just beautiful, so I figured I would draw that."

Lilly's mother, Donna Brown, said that the bright picture shows her daughter's resilience.

"She's just a happy, optimistic person and still has her sparkle," Brown said.

One year after her diagnosis, Lilly said that she's feeling good and looking forward to catching up on life.

"We're taking the vacations we couldn't take last year," she said.

The vacations include a trip to London from the Make-a-Wish Foundation. She'll also throw out the first pitch at a Boston Red Sox game and maybe get a chance to meet her favorite player, Johnny Damon.
