Curry Leads Davidson Past Winthrop

POSTED: 12:33 am EST November 22, 2008

(Sports Network) - Stephen Curry dropped a game-high 30 points and handed out 13 assists to lead the 21st-ranked Davidson Wildcats past the Winthrop Eagles, 97-70.

Andrew Lovedale scored 20 and hauled in a game-high 15 boards for Davidson (3-1), which after starting the season with lopsided wins over Guilford and James Madison, ran into a buzzsaw in 12th-ranked Oklahoma dropping an 82-78 decision as part of the NIT Season Tip-Off.

"We came out in the second half and our defense picked it up. Steph (Curry) was fantastic and Andrew (Lovedale) played the game of his career," Davidson head coach Bob McKillop said.

Steve Rossiter chipped in 13 points and Will Archambault 12 as the Wildcats shot 49.3 percent (33-of-67) from the floor and connected on 13-of-32 three- point shots.

Curry was coming off a career-high 44 points in Davidson's first real test on the young season but the only other double-digit scorer against the Sooners was Lovedale who tallied 10 points. The Wildcats got a more balanced effort Friday with five players finishing in double figures.

Cameron Stanley collected 20 points on 7-of-12 shooting and Mantoris Robinson added 10 for Winthrop (1-3), which easily dismissed North Greenville in its opener last Friday but then proceeded to drop consecutive decisions to South Carolina and Akron.

Charles Corbin was one of four Eagles to contribute eight points with Corbin adding seven rebounds in a losing effort.

The Eagles stayed with the Wildcats in the first half despite the latter finishing with a modest 8-3 run. Curry sank a three-ball that was answered by a Stanley jumper, but Curry hit for a pair of free throws to Stanley's one in the final minute. Lovedale finished off the half with a jumper and added a free throw for a 41-35 halftime advantage.

Davidson picked up where they left off in the second half opening on a 14-5 run to widen its lead to 15. Back-to-back three-pointers from Archambault and Curry made it a 79-52 game with just under seven minutes to play and the Wildcats had little trouble in claiming victory from there.

Game Notes

Curry came into the contest averaging a tremendous 35.3 ppg...Justin Burton led the Eagles with seven assists...Raymond Davis, Andre Jones and George Valentine also had eight points for Winthrop...Bryant Barr was the other Wildcats player in double figures with 11 points...Winthrop shot 38.6 percent (22-of-57) from the floor including a 2-for-13 performance from three-point range.
