Teevens Returns As Football Coach At Dartmouth

POSTED: 3:00 pm EST January 5, 2005

Dartmouth rehired an old friend Wednesday, bringing back alum Eugene "Buddy" Teevens as football coach.

Teevens returns to the team he guided to consecutive Ivy League titles in 1990 and 1991, poised to relive the success he enjoyed with the Big Green for five seasons.

The 48-year-old was also a quarterback on Dartmouth's 1978 Ivy League championship team.

"His accomplishments here as a student, an athlete and a coach, combined with his experience nationally and knowledge of the Ivy League, make him the ideal person to lead Dartmouth football," said school president James Wright.

Most recently, Teevens served as head coach at Stanford University from 2002 until he was fired at the end of last season. He left Dartmouth in 1991 to become the head coach at Tulane, where he stayed until 1996.

From the time he left Tulane until he took over at Stanford, Teevens was the offensive coordinator and receivers coach at Illinois (1997-1998), and spent time on Steve Spurrier's staff at the University of Florida (1998-2001).

"Everyone says that timing in life is everything," said Dartmouth athletics director Josie Harper. "The time is perfect for Buddy to return to Hanover to combine two of his passions -- his expertise and knowledge in the game of football and his love for Dartmouth College."

Teevens owns a 60-99-2 all-time record in 15 years as a head coach, including a 26-22-2 mark at Dartmouth. He replaces John Lyons, who was fired by the school in November after the Big Green finished with a 1-9 record last season -- the worst mark in school history.

Lyons spent 13 seasons as Dartmouth's head coach.
