Fritz Wetherbee

This may be the perfect union, Fritz Wetherbee and New Hampshire Chronicle.

Fritz has covered New Hampshire for more than half a century. He has written for newspapers and magazines, done radio commentary and reports, and made films and television shows about his home state. Few people know more about the Granite State. And besides, he is good at what he does. Frtiz has been honored with three Emmy Awards. Last year he was given the gold for Outstanding Achievement as On Camera Talent in the whole of New England for his work on New Hampshire Chronicle.

"This is my dream job," Wetherbee says about his New Hampshire Chronicle association. "I love this state. It's full of quirky people and odd stuff. No matter where you go in this state you will find some oddity or some wonderful story. And Chronicle has developed such respect over the years that people go out of their way to help you find stuff. In some ways, this job is a license to snoop. What could be better?"

There have been Wetherbees in New England since 1630. Fritz's branch of the family settled in Lyndeboro, Amherst, and Mont Vernon. He was born July 3, 1936, at 3:30 p.m. at Memorial Hospital in Nashua. He was named for his grandfather: Fred Minot Wetherbee II. Fritz is a nickname. He grew up in Milford.

Over the years he has been a stonemason, tree climber, house painter, in the U.S. Army, college instructor, photographer, cinematographer, newspaper reporter/editor, radio news director, actor, film/video editor, producer, scriptwriter, and advertising agency creative director.

In the early-60s, he was a beatnik and performed his own poetry in the coffee houses in New York City. For 10 years (1975-84) he was news director and general manager of radio stations WSCV/WSLE-FM in Peterborough. From 1985 to 1995 he was the host of New Hampshire Crossroads on Public Television.

Fritz has one son, Caleb (born 1962), and two granddaughters, Sophia and Anna. He presently lives in Acworth.
