A 4-year-old boy alerted his family to a fire that ended up consuming their Tilton home Tuesday morning.

Officials said the homeowner was at work, and her 16-year-old son was asleep in the living room when the teen's 4-year-old nephew alerted him to the fire in the front bedroom of 256 Lancaster Hill Road.

"I woke up to my nephew yelling and my dog barking at me," Jesse Burdick said. "I stood up, and there was smoke up to my chest and flames coming out of my room."

Burdick said he got his sister out of her room and ran out of the house. Six towns responded quickly to the fire, but officials said the flames had too much of a head start.

"We are in a rural area of Tilton, and we had to rely on a tanker shuttle," Capt. Brad Ober said. "We don't have hydrants in this area, and manpower is always an issue during the day."

Investigators said they fire may have been caused by a cell phone charger or plug-in room deodorizer in the front bedroom. Everyone escaped the fire, but the family lost everything.

"Right now, it's a matter of collecting the pieces," said Laurie Dunlop, a family friend. "Any help they could have would be appreciated."

Homeowner Becky Blake said she is insured and plans to rebuild, but with school starting next week, her children have no school supplies. Her daughter, the only girl on the high school football team, lost her uniform.

Dunlop said firefighters were able to save one prized possession, Blake's motorcycle. Burdick said he and his sister are most upset about the loss of their snowboards.

A fund has been set up to help the family. Donations can be dropped off at Laurie Dunlop Realty in Tilton, or you can get more information by calling 603-286-4400.
