MOULTONBOROUGH, N.H. -- One day after a gas explosion in Moultonborough killed a little girl, another explosion in the same small town damaged another house.

Officials Offer Safety Tips

Amelia Luhrmann, 5, of Medfield, Mass., was killed when her family's lakeside home exploded Saturday night. Witnesses reported two explosions, which fire officials blamed on the house's propane fuel system.

"People were lying on the ground, and I guess two or three were physically blown out of the house," neighbor Paul Sampson said.

Sampson rushed to the scene on his boat and helped rescue the six family members who survived the blast.

Fire marshals said propane gas fueled the fire, but they're not sure where the leak originated or what might have ignited it.

It was the first of two home explosions in Moultonborough over the weekend. The second happened less than 24 hours later at another vacation home. The chimney was blown off and fell through the roof.

Fire officials said four people were staying in the house at the time of the explosion, but no one was injured.

In both cases, people did not report smelling gas.

"And that's entirely possible given where they were, they may not have been where the gas was leaking," deputy state Fire Marshal Bill Degnan said.

Fire officials recommend checking for leaks around tanks by using liquid detergent in a spray bottle. If you see bubbles along the lines or connections, there's a leak.

If you don't want to check yourself, hire a professional. And if you smell the distinct odor of propane gas, get out of the building and call for help.
